Dogs and cats may enter South Africa from the United Kingdom without
quarantine. The requirements are as follows:-
Owners must obtain an Import Permit from the Director of Veterinary Services, Private Bag X138, Pretoria Street, Pretoria, South Africa. There is a charge of South African 90 Rand which must accompany each application. Payment may be made by cash or bankers draft. Credit cards are not accepted.
All dogs and cats entering South Africa must have been microchipped and it is recommended that they are vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to shipment. Dogs born in the U.K. must be blood tested within 30 days of shipment for Leishmania with a negative result. Dogs born outside the U.K. must be tested for Babesia and Heartworm followed by medication over a 6 month period, the first month’s treatment must be undertaken in the U.K. prior to shipment, and the remaining 5 months can be administered either in the U.K. or in South Africa after arrival.
A DEFRA Export Health Certificate is required which must be issued by an L.V.I Veterinary Surgeon and signed not more than 10 days prior to shipment.
Par Air have agents in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Cape Town. These agents will, if required, collect dogs and cats on arrival at the airport, clear through customs and deliver to the owner’s house.
